Three firms get shown above the results, decided by rules that have almost nothing to do with your website. It is the smallest of the four factors by effort and the one most firms have wrong without knowing.
Organic results answer “who explains this best.” The map pack answers “who is nearby, open, and verifiably real.” Different question, different inputs, largely different work.
Which is why a firm can rank well organically and be invisible in the map — or the reverse. Local is decided by your business profile, your categories, whether your details agree across the web, and your reviews.
Bad link building gets you a slow decline. A fake office address or a keyword-stuffed business name gets your profile suspended, and you disappear from the map that afternoon. Competitors report each other for this constantly.
Worth saying plainly: proximity has a ceiling. If your office is forty minutes from the courthouse, no amount of local work puts you in the map pack for searches next to it. We would rather set that expectation now than explain it in month six.
Confirm you actually control the profile. A surprising number of firms do not, and cannot edit their own listing.
Primary category first, then secondaries and services. The cheapest meaningful change in local.
Find every listing with an old address or number and correct it. Tedious, and it moves the needle.
A repeatable ask at case closing, plus a response process for the ones you would rather not have.
Map rank varies block by block, so we measure across a grid rather than from one point.
Ask clients for reviews — genuinely, at the right moment, without filtering for the happy ones. We can build the process, write the request, and chase the follow-up, but the ask has to come from the person who handled their case. This is the only part of the four factors that depends on your team doing something weekly.
Category and citation fixes can move map position within weeks. Review volume is the long part, and it is the input you cannot rush or buy.
Claim, complete, correct the primary category. Often the single fastest visible change in the whole engagement.
Corrections propagate across directories and data aggregators. Map position firms up across the grid, not just at your office.
Steady volume and recent dates beat a burst two years ago. This is also what feeds your Local Service Ads rank.
Your review profile and local signals feed Local Service Ads rank directly — so this work makes a paid channel cheaper at the same time. See the LSA page.
Local is the least of the four by hours and one of the highest per hour — because the fixes are finite and most competitors never made them.
Winning it is worth doing and it is not the whole result. Below the map, the other three factors decide everything.
Mentions and links feed local prominence as well as organic rank.
