What is Google’s Page Speed?
Hi, I am Jason Hennessey reporting live from the studios of Everspark Interactive. Have you ever been to a website that just seems to take forever to load? Have you often wondered about the speed and performance of your website? Did you know that the speed of your website could actually prevent you from top ranking on Google? Well I’m happy to report that yesterday Google launched a new and simple way to test your website’s speed. Why don’t we cover this new Google Page Speed and see how it will work for you.
If you are running a business in the virtual world then you probably understand the importance of having your website up to date and running at its best. A customer will not want to wait for your page to load, and if your page does in fact take too long to load there is a good chance that the customer may move on to one of your competitors. Obviously, this is the last thing that you want to happen. So, what can you do to make sure that your page has adequate speed and is running at its best? Today, you can try the new Google Page Speed Feature.
This is a very simple feature to use and doesn’t require you to download any type of program. It is all done online and all you have to do is simply type in the name of the website that you want to check. Don’t worry, there is no spam or viruses you will have to worry about, it is from Google Labs. So, you can rest assure that this is a safe program to use. After you type in your website address, the diagnostic tools will run it’s magic and then come back with the overall analysis of your site. Google will then make suggestions to you based on the results of the report of ways that you can improve.
These suggestions will come back as a series of priorities. There is the high priority, medium and low, with suggestions on how to fix each of them. Of course, the high priority items are ones that should be fixed right away. These are the issues that are occurring that could be causing your website to not rank on the first page of Google. One of the major high priority issues that Google’s Page Speed will pick up are any browser caching issues that could be happening as well as any problems with images that may be happening. Sometimes, having to many images or extra-large image have been known to slow down the performance of one’s website. If this is happening to you, the new tool will tell you what to do in order to fix it. For example one of the solutions that it will give you in reference to images could be to combine your images into CSS sprites.
All of the issues found within your site are displayed in an easy to read format. The suggestions to fix the problems are also displayed with a link that you can click on for more information on how to fix these issues.
Some of the other low priority issues could deal with certain java script issues, styles and scripts, optimizing images and many other programming problems. Google’s page speed makes it easy to understand and how to fix these problems, even if you are pretty clueless about the programming side of things.
