The Public Relations Society of America Georgia Chapter welcomed members and guests to the annual media day Thursday, August 14. EverSpark Interactive’s Dave Paul and Denae Olberding attended the coffee-with-the-media morning session in Buckhead.
The pre-lunch discussion featured local media mavens from around the Atlanta metro area. The panel included:
- Jovita Moore, Evening Anchor, WSB-TV (ABC), Channel 2 Action News at 5 p.m. and Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat
- Jim Van Anglen, News Editor, overseeing state news for Georgia and Alabama for the Associated Press in Atlanta
- Jennifer Leslie, Reporter, WXIA (NBC), contributes to morning and weekend newscasts, works early mornings and reports for both 11Alive News Today and 11Alive News Saturday & Sunday Morning
- Ninette Sosa, Reporter, WTAY (106.7)
Moderator Mitch Leff of Leff & Associates opened up the floor with questions from when the best time and ways to find a pitch are, how to stand out from a crowd when pitching a story, what subject lines should be in an email to get picked up, finding the right angle and overall tactics for PR professionals to follow when working with the media.
Jennifer Leslie of 11Alive News gave insight on how relationships are formed and developed. Her advice encouraged PR professionals to never hesitate pitching an idea or story. She did suggest that the pitch be timely and if it doesn’t become a TV story, the web story opportunity also exists.
A common theme highlighted throughout the session was for the audience to remember, keep relevancy and timeliness front of mind. Do your research and realize that as Jim Van Anglen stated, “If we don’t have sources we don’t do our jobs,” therefore everyone in the room collectively works together in the media industry!
The seminar concluded with an interactive Q&A session with the audience where the members of PRSA and guests were provided with one-on-one attention from the panelists.
