Chatting with SEO Intern Philip Walker

This post is from a conversation that I recently had with one of our SEO interns, Philip Walker, a mathematics major at Kennesaw State University.

Having worked closely with Philip for a big part of his six-month internship, I can say that he brings an incredible sense of clarity to every SEO task that he’s taken on.

One of the reasons that he has impressed me so much is that prior to becoming an SEO intern at EverSpark Interactive, Philip had never even heard the term SEO.

As a matter of fact, one of the first things that I asked Philip before we began our interview is how his math background has helped or hindered his role here.

This was his response:

“I think that a better understanding of math makes digital marketing easier since most of digital marketing is done through understanding Google (or any search engine, etc.).  Also, data interpretation is a key part of digital marketing, which requires an analytical mind.”

1. What would you say has been your biggest takeaway, as an EverSpark Interactive intern?         

Learning what an actual professional job is like.  In terms of the corporate environment, office interactions or however you want to put it.

I completely learned a new skill because I had no knowledge of SEO prior to this experience.  Working here has opened my eyes to a whole new world that I was previously unaware of beforehand.

2. After your experience as an intern, is interning something that you’d recommend to others?  Why or why not?

Yes, I think an internship can be a valuable experience in seeing if the job is actually for you.  Because if you haven’t worked in a particular field before, how will you know if you’d really like it or not?

It’s like a real-life demonstration because you can learn more useful knowledge in a hands-on setting than you would learn about that same topic in a classroom setting.

3. Are there any insights you would offer to organizations considering hiring interns?

  • Clearly define what you expect from the intern.
  • Maybe set goals going in.
  • It would be good if you could measure how the interns have grown.
  • This would be valuable for recruiting new interns, too.

4. Is there any advice that you have for students who may be considering taking on an internship?

You get out what you put in. If you want to learn, you’ll have to work at it.  But also, if you don’t like what you’re doing as an intern, then there’s a good chance you wouldn’t like it in a full-time role.  So be wary of that.  Also, try to make connections with everyone that you meet at your internship because it can help you in immeasurable ways.

5. Let’s say that you were made offers for two identical internships at your dream employer. But there was one KEY difference:

  • One internship offered you intern pay, without course credit
  • The other internship offered you course credit, without pay     

Which would you apply for and why?

I feel like I’m more motivated by pay, than by course credits.  Even if it was internship pay as opposed to professional pay.

So you would have done the internship even if your school didn’t offer credits for this internship?

Absolutely, I would definitely do it again!
