Google Overlays

Last week Google announced that they’re in the midst of testing yet another search engine feature designed to make all of our online lives a bit easier and hopefully more efficient in the process. Google’s new experiment involves the implementation of overlays that contain additional information related to your specific search result.

The overlay panels are quite detailed and useful, helping users find more information about a site before clicking over for a closer look. Unfortunately, at the moment whichever site you’re searching for needs to have a Wikipedia article, but depending on how the test goes and whether or not the public has a positive response, I’m confident that the Google overlays will expand considerably to include many more sites than just Wikipedia.

The fact that Google’s always looking for new ways to enhance its user-interface is one of the primary reasons for the company’s continued industry dominance. It’s a near-undisputed fact that Google’s search engine algorithm is far and away the most sophisticated, requiring a massive financial investment devoted to only the most cutting edge search engine technology on the market.

But the question still remains: are the Google overlays worth all the time and money? What do you think about them? At this point, it’s too early to tell if they’ve got what it takes to become a regular part of Google’s search engine repertoire, but stay tuned . . .
