What’s New This Week:

If Social Media Were People: The Internet Party

Does social media get in the way of what you need to do every day? You’re not alone. “Cyberloafing” is has been happening for years, with employees spending more and more time on sites that are unrelated to their work. According to an article in Forbes, 64% of employees surveyed admitted to visiting non-work-related sites every single day. As social media becomes more engrained in our lifestyles, do we need to start thinking about cutting ourselves off in order to get anything done?

The Great App Roundup: Our Favorites

For those who regularly attend the meetups, there was a homework assignment to come up with a list of 3-5 apps that you like or regularly use. As discussed in the April 30th meetup, Google AdWords is taking more of a turn towards using applications to generate revenue for businesses. This shows that apps are becoming more a part of our lives, and will be an extremely important part of future marketing and advertising strategies.

As you can imagine, Jason gets a lot of emails. If you suffer from an overload of messages, then SaneBox might help to restore some order to your inbox. This handy little gadget prioritizes your emails in order of importance and summarizes the rest, allowing you to “train” it to recognize what you want.

TrelloIf, like many business people, you find yourself awash in sticky notes and reminders, then Trello might make a good app to try. Not only can you get instant clarity on any project you happen to have going on in your life from work to a home remodeling project, but you can also invite others to collaborate with you on the projects you have set up. Dividing up projects into “Ideas,” “To Do,” “Doing” and “Done” helps keep you and your projects on track, and never lets you forget anything.

Ubersuggest, an ultra-handy online app, has been discussed multiple times throughout the Google Meetups a great way to research your keywords and generate topic suggestions for articles and blog posts. Seeing as it’s based off of Google’s keyword tool, it makes it great for generating topics on what people are actually searching for.

Vincent Crocitto:

Like many his age, Vincent collects most of his music online. But how do you keep on top of what you want to download when you’ve got over 10,000 songs? Shazam allows you to collect a list of songs that you don’t currently have in your library, and add them as you go along, thus never missing a moment to rock out.

As Vinnie is still a student, he still runs into that complex math problem every now and then. WolframAlpha can help you with what you want to calculate or know about. If you’re one of those folks who also likes to give their brain a workout, you can even click their problem generator for some math practice.

When you’re looking to get and keep healthy, tracking your fitness goals can be one of the most important aspects of your training. Samsung owners, particularly those with the S4 and above, essentially have the ability to turn their phone into a fully-loaded fitness tracker with the innovation of the SHealth App. While other phones are quickly catching up, Samsung users essentially have the cream of the crop right now.

 Find My Phone

FindmyphoneLocating that lost or stolen cell phone can be a horrifying experience, particularly if it’s been stolen or left in a public place. Apps like Find My Phone are able to pinpoint the exact location of your phone, no matter where it is in the world. This is particularly handy for parents who want to find out where their children are, and can even be used to find your spouse’s phone.

YeswareOne of the toughest things that you can face as a marketer or salesperson is knowing whether your email has been viewed, read or thrown immediately in the trash. Yesware allows you to do all that, making it easy to see who it’s time to follow-up on. It’s also extremely easy to download to Gmail and use on the go.

Rich Spaulding:

As far as handy PPC tools go, is one of the best for checking in on what your competitors are doing. Not only can you see what they’re bidding on, but you can get an overall feel for what they’re spending and it’s relatively accurate.

HittailAs AdWords get more and more expensive and the market more competitive, long tail keywords are becoming more important to your SEO strategy. With Hittail, you can get around the dreaded “not provided” information from Google and see what keywords are worth investigating further for your campaigns.

googlealertsGoogle Alerts

Keeping up with what’s going on in your industry is essential for your content plans, particularly if you’re a freelance writer who happens to write for many different types of businesses. Setting up a Google Alert for whatever you’re particularly interested in can give you a daily run-down of what’s happening in your world, allowing you to write content that’s timely, and most importantly, relevant.

Smart Voice Recorder

Smart Voice RecorderAs a working freelancer, Kari needs to record interviews and meetings for playback later. The Smart Voice Recorder is a free app that can be downloaded to your phone, that produces high-quality recordings. It also can be set to “skip over” or pause on silences, saving room for more recording. With 100 hours available, it’s hard to think you’ll ever need that feature.

soundcloudSound Cloud

As a sometimes music journalist, Kari is regularly sent new songs and even albums by bands. However, more and more PR’s and bands are leaning towards using digital downloading instead of the more familiar CD’s or vinyl. By using services like Soundcloud, journalists can easily download or simply stream tracks for review purposes. Making it sharable or downloadable is completely up to the artist.

YelpDespite the growing disillusionment with the validity of review sites, the fact remains that Yelp is still one of the most helpful guides to most metropolitan areas. From restaurants to doctors, most services are listed on here. If you’re a bit wary of the reviews are real or not, take them with a pinch of salt and do a little research.

fiverrNeed some quick copy done? Fadi used Fiverr service to get a squeeze page done to try to maximize his conversion rate.
