What’s New This Week:

Google To Warn Searchers When A Mobile URL Redirects to the Homepage

search+result+redirect+annotationWith mobile website views growing more rapidly than ever before, ensuring your site is optimized and not full of faulty redirects which might frustrate users. According to Google’s Webmaster Central Blog, the search engine will now start indicating to searchers if they feel they’re going to be simply redirected to the site’s homepage, rather than the page they clicked on. You can see by the example how that will look, giving users the choice on whether to proceed or not. Google goes on to explain:

We’d like to spare users the frustration of landing on irrelevant pages and help webmasters fix the faulty redirects. Starting today in our English search results in the US, whenever we detect that smartphone users are redirected to a homepage instead of the page they asked for, we may note it below the result. If you still wish to proceed to the page, you can click “Try anyway.”

Fortunately though, Google isn’t just warning those who are searching. said in their recent piece on the change that this will also greatly help webmasters in identifying crawl errors with smartphone searching. Simply go to the “Crawl Errors” section of Webmaster Tools to see more.

Generating Content: How About Interviews?

Ann Bailey of Everspark InteractiveEveryone is always looking for smart ways to increase their content offerings, particularly blog posts that will provide a chance to educate and enhance the user’s experience with your site or product. One of the ways that’s been discussed in previous meetings was through the use of interviews. This was highlighted by professional writer, former journalist and regular meetup member, Ann Bailey, particularly for law clients that EverSpark is currently working with. By simply interviewing the law professionals involved, she was able to generate tons of potential site and blog material in as little as 45 minutes. Additionally, some of these ideas can also be put into infographics, which are hugely popular for social sharing. As content professionals continue to hunt down the best and brightest material for their sites, this could be an extremely useful tool. You can be sure we’ll be discussing this further at future meetings.

Google Is Purchasing Satellites

If you’re wondering what Google is spending their money on in 2014, it looks like it’s satellites. Google is building an estimated 180 satellites to spread internet access worldwide, even to the remotest parts of the world. By bridging this gap, they will not only be able to provide access, but also serve ads. Trouble In The Stars?

When it comes to reviews, stars are everything. Up until recently Amazon’s star rating system was being shown on Amazon’s Google search results. While Google may have been giving them an exception before, it would appear that now Amazon needs to get their code in check. As seen in the example to the left, star reviews are now being left off of Amazon’s search results. While some in the meetup didn’t really rely on star ratings, many did. This could actually lead to loss of business for Amazon. However, it was also discussed on how much business would Amazon get through Google anyway. Should SEO Bloggers & Writers Go Away?

Bill SlawskiSEO bloggers and writers have been watching their status rise in the past couple of years. However, with the new Google mandates to produce good, quality content that helps to educate users, are they really necessary anymore? Again, it goes back to providing for the user first, and to the SEO gods second. If you are producing good quality copy, SEO should naturally follow. However, pointed out that SEO guru, Bill Slawski, asked on Twitter if SEO writing was truly dead. Obviously this is a huge, continual debate which will have web writers up-in-arms on both sides. It will be interesting to see how this develops in the coming months.
