Remember when the Panda update went international? Oh man, were those some good times! We in the US and select other English speaking countries had already experienced the worst of what Panda could bring, and it almost felt fair that international sites go through it to. Plus, watching Panda do damage from afar was kind of cathartic after seeing it do damage to our and our peers’ sites. Then, the protected searches came along, with Google saying it wanted to protect users’ privacy when they’re logged into Google, and SEOs were worried again. What would this mean for being able to analyze search volume? Withheld, or “not provided,” would show up for many webmasters as they tried to analyze their traffic. Well, now that secure search is going international, which is not as fun to watch from afar. Why? Because this means that search data will become less and less available for analysis!
Social media has been on the brain lately – from the Facebook Timeline for businesses rollout, to the small scale Twitter brand pages introduction, to Pinterest’s explosion onto the online marketing scene. But let’s not forget the newer and perhaps the more important of the social networks – Google +. Why most important? Because of Search Plus Your World, and the impact of Google + data and connections on the now more personalized Google search results. It looks like these types of results will permeate international search markets now too, as Search Engine Land predicts, due to a recent Google announcement that it will be expanding its secure connections to its country-specific international domains (google.co.uk,etc.).
What’s The Big Deal?
If you don’t recall, there was uproar last fall from the online marketing community because of Google’s changes to its security, specifically related to those searches done by logged in Google users. Those signed in users could search on a secure connection, thereby blocking visibility for many online marketers as to analytics and tracking what keywords were bringing in how much traffic.
A Google software engineer announced Monday on the Inside Search blog that this protection will now be expanded across the globe:
“Several months ago we made a change to our default search experience on google.com — when you’re signed into Google, we add SSL encryption to increase the privacy and security of your web searches. The change encrypts your search queries and our search results page, which is particularly important when you’re using an open, unsecured Internet connection.
We’re now ready to expand this protection, so over the next few weeks we will begin introducing SSL search beyond google.com to our local domains around the globe. As before, we hope that these efforts to expand the use of SSL encryption in our services motivate other companies to adopt SSL more broadly.”
Search Engine Land predicts that this change will lead to an international expansion of Search Plus Your World, and I think we can all agree that is exactly what this looks like. Though Google is coy about its immediate plans to expand, the search engine does acknowledge that the ultimate goal is for Search Plus Your World to go international.
