I’m sure you’ve at least heard some type of buzz about Pinterest in the past months, or at least heard the name. Pinterest is a social media site that was founded in 2010. You can liken it to a modern day bulletin or mood board where you pin pictures of things you like (ie. Clothing, gifts, recipes, quotes, etc.). You have different boards named with different themes and you can pin different images to these boards. All the boards together make up your Pinterest. Right now the site is in open Beta testing and there is a slight waiting list for membership (but you should be accepted within a couple of days!).

Check out the Numbers

Because of the typical them of “pinned” images this website is especially popular with women (58% of users) and people ages 25-44 (59% of users). The site is the fastest growing independent site ever with 10 million unique monthly visitors. To give you an idea Pinterest has generated more referral traffic than YouTube, Google+, and LinkedIn combined.

Pinterest generates traffic similiar to Twitter and Google

What well-known brands are doing…

Several well-known brands have Pinterest listed as one of their main referral sites including, Etsy, Google, Martha Stewart, Better Homes and Gardens, Amazon, and more. Major brands have already taken notice and created their own “Boards” as well like, Whole Foods, Chobani Yogurt, Kate Spade, Williams-Sonoma, and several others.

Some of William-Sonoma's boards on their Pinterest

Major sites are even providing links to their Pinterests right next to their Facebook and Twitter Links.

The very top of the Bergdorf Goodman main website

What is the hype about and can it help your business/brand?

First of all, this site has had exponential growth in the past few months and is being recognized by Time, TechCrunch, and Mashable (even Mark Zuckerberg has his own Pinterest!). Not only is it getting a lot of press, but the site is designed to feed your addiction. On Pinterest your news feed or “bulletin board” is a grid style layout. The grid was designed by Evan Sharp, Pinterest Designer, Co-Founder, and former designer at Facebook. The site is addicting because a user tailors their Pinterest experience to her own interests.

Pinterest's signature grid-style layout.

Some tips…

1. Try not to promote yourself directly. If you are a Bridal shop don’t just pin today’s latest wedding dresses, give tips for de-stressing before the big day or show a whimsical DIY centerpiece. This way Pinterest is showing what your business/brand stands for, the ideals behind it. It’s not direct promotion this way, but users following your pins will feel a deeper connection to you.

Ex: Chobani

This greek yogurt company doesn’t just show their new product. They have several different boards promoting different themes such as where they get their inspiration, recipes that include yogurt, how to include yogurt in a healthy diet, and so on.

Chobani's boards on their Pinterest

2. Interact with users and other brands. Follow, re-pin, like other users content. This comes off as a more personal interaction and increases your engagement within the Pinterest community.

Ex: Bergdorf Goodman

This well-known high end department store follows Nina Garcia, Neiman Marcus, Newsweek, Glamour, and several other individual users.

Some of the Pinterest users that Bergdorf Goodman follows.

3. Create pins that link back to your site. While you shouldn’t outwardly promote your product, it is still a good idea to link relevant pins to your site, such as an article or tip from your blog.

Ex: William-Sonoma

They don’t necessarily mention their product specifically. They pin about experiences of their employees for example that link back to their site. From there a user could easily go to the William-Sonoma retail section.

William-Sonoma pinned a photo from their blog.

4. Be Impulsive. If something catches your eye that reminds you of your company or brand, pin it! Some pins don’t have to be so obvious, like maybe an inspirational quote that got you through a stressful day. Pin it and share your company/brand story.

Ex: Etsy

Etsy has a board devoted to good reads. While they don’t sell these books on their website they do reinforce the ideals the company holds.

Etsy pinned a book from Amazon.com

On the other hand, Pinterest may not be for everyone. So a used car dealer, for example, may not want to start their own boards because people are not on Pinterest for that sort of information. Also keep in mind the feminine demographic, your business may be suited for another site (possibly Gentelmint the “man’s” version of Pinterest). Most importantly have fun with the experience. Joining Pinterest should only help your business and be a compliment to other social networks (side note: all pins can be linked to your Facebook and Twitter accounts).

If anything, just check Pinterest out and test the waters. Just put yourself on the waiting list now and let us know how your experience is in the comments below. Happy Pinning!

A thought leader is someone who is looked to as an authoritative source of information. One of many different ways to demonstrate thought leadership is to consistently create content – whether it be in the form of blog posts, articles, or video interviews and blogs. Though, as SEOs, we are used to presenting our clients as thought leaders and authoritative sources of information, do we often give as much thought to presenting ourselves as such? What makes a thought leader in the SEO industry?

A Little History and My Story

In early 2011, many SEOs turned to writing content as a way to dig themselves and their clients out of deep, miserable Panda shaped holes. Unique, high-quality and oft-updated content was (and still is) the way to go. Being an authority and an expert was (and still is, too) extremely important, as knowledge tends to make text shine. These are the tenets of SEO content (among others, of course!) that I have learned since I arrived at EverSpark way back in the summer, just at the peak of that desperate time period when the ripple effects of Panda were just beginning to really affect many sites. I was hired as a recently graduated honors student with a degree in English and was valued in the wake of the massive update for my mechanical, grammatical and creative writing prowess. And for nearly a year now, I have been working here as a writer and editor, blogging about SEO & social media for nearly as long.

Over time, my role expanded, of course – but the one thing that hasn’t and probably will never change is my unique perspective. I don’t have a background in SEO, or even in marketing; I’m a writer at heart, though I truly have learned a lot (how my brain has not yet reached capacity, I don’t know). Most importantly, I’m an outsider here – but I have come to view that particular position as a very positive thing. I’m able to watch the SEO industry function and evolve -both in the blogosphere, as I research possible blog topics, and around me, as I watch the day to day doings here at the office. I do not participate (usually) in the SEO side of things, but I am an active observer and sometimes find myself actually understanding (imagine that!) the things my coworkers are doing to promote our clients on the search engines and across the online universe. I write about new developments and industry wide changes – reporting on them, sometimes adding my two cents from my unique outsider vantage point (and sometimes not commenting at all – it’s not always bad to let the facts speak for themselves). But would I call myself a thought leader? Not in a million years. Do I want to become one? Of course!

Virtually everyone I work with is creative, innovative and demonstrates thought-leadership within our company daily with new ideas that better our clients’ online presences. In fact, I often wonder what the heck they have me here for. Especially in SEO, a business that has such a bad rep but that is populated by so many talented, truly brilliant people, thought-leadership is necessary but esoteric. Surely, knowledge is incredibly important to have when you wish to demonstrate industry leading creativity – but even knowledge can be made up for to some degree with thorough research (I’m the perfect example of that fact!). So how does one become a thought leader – a voice presumably heard ‘round the SEO world? Is it just years of experience, is it adaptability and creative thinking, is it knowing the right way to market yourself and your content, or is there something more to it?

Being an innovative thinker and writer in an age when your thoughts and typing skills can barely keep up with daily industry changes certainly requires a degree of creative thinking: in SEO, where “tried and true” tactics are only true until the next algorithm change (possibly) makes them obsolete, the moving parts of the industry keep us all on our toes. But being a blogger and leader can’t just be about reporting facts, or about simply finding fresh angles to the thousands of blog posts and stories published daily about the goings on in the SEO world. Perhaps it’s about developing and sharing unique solutions to problems and obstacles that SEOs face. But do “unique” and “different” solutions to SEO problems exist in enough volume to pave the way for true thought-leaders to emerge? Do many SEOs even want to share their “secret sauce” in order to become thought leaders in the search engine marketing space? Or are our thought leaders only those who don’t practice SEO, just report on it?

My Thoughts… on Thought Leadership

In an effort to become such a leader in the space, it’s important to write and write often, well and thoroughly. Instructional posts for the benefits of others, with screen shots, can be very helpful for establishing authority and demonstrating knowledge in the SEO space. I know most of the bloggers I follow do this every now and then, and as a reader and learner, I always appreciate it.

Possibly equally important is the ease of engagement that comes along with being a leader in the industry. Being able to engage and connect with readers and followers must put you on the road to thought leadership. Twitter is a great place for thought leaders to build large follower counts, share information, and demonstrate expertise. Also good for this is the continually growing Google +.

A thought leader writes about important news in the industry, comments on them, and provides one or two creative solutions or innovative ideas about that news.

You Tell Me

What do you think makes an SEO or an SEO blogger a “thought leader” in the SEO space? Is it adding useful and fresh perspective to the online conversations going on around us on a daily basis? Is it simply providing compelling information that backs up prevailing notions out there already? Have any tips for developing thought leadership? Drop us a line in the comments, or leave us the link to your blog post discussing your opinion, and we’ll share it on our Facebook page!

In early September 2011, Facebook launched the new timeline feature exclusively to app developers. By December, the timeline had been made public. As of today, Facebook users have the option to adopt the new timeline or keep Facebook’s older format until Mark Zuckerberg’s soon-to-be public company decides to make the new changes permanent for all users. The new timeline for users looks like this:

Timeline: New Features

New features include the large cover photo above the fold that you see first when looking at a user’s page. On the right there is an actual timeline with years so that people can click on a specific time in your life. You are now able to add a significant event such as pictures to your birth, when you’ve broken a bone, moved in to a new apartment, bought a new car, had your first kiss, or even lost weight. As you scroll down, events and messages are lined up chronologically, likes and friends are separated by month, and application activity is separated by month. For example, check out my profile:

What Does This Have to Do With Businesses?

But what does this mean for your business or brand? According to Business Insider, the Facebook timeline is expected to roll out for Facebook Business pages on February 29. In the mean time, initial changes to Facebook overall will have effects on how businesses do Facebook marketing.

The big idea here is engagement, engagement, engagement. Now more than ever Facebook is designed for brands and businesses to engage with their consumers and fans. With the integration of Facebook timeline everything a user does is visual, even a comment or “like” is a separate event on their timeline.

Along with the timeline came several changes that marketers should be aware of, especially with the advent of a pages timeline. For instance, Facebook now has an Open Graph that allows brands to create interactive applications for users. Now instead of just “liking” a page, user can “listen,” “eat,” “drink,” etc. Some examples are the Washington Post showing what articles users have read, Spotify showing what users have listened to, and Foodspotting showing what users eat:

With the Spotify integration with Facebook, we can see what our friends are listening to and even listen with them.

The Facebook changes allow popular “Foodspotting” to show everything people are eating in one place.

Applications like these are a great way for a consumer to show brand loyalty or love for their favorite business. If a user chooses to share their experiences as a consumer of a good or service it is great exposure for businesses and brands.

In addition to these new applications, users can follow their friends in real time with the new Facebook Ticker that is on the right side of the News Feed. This allows users to see what their friends are up to at that instant, much like a Twitter feed. Again, a great place for brand and business exposure. Another new feature is the share button. Located at the bottom of a post, users can repost the link to their own timeline and the original post will show how many times people have “shared.” This is a great way to expand a brand or business’ reach on Facebook:

The News Feed has also changed now with Top Stories and Recent Stories. Recent Stories obviously means the most up to date posts by friends, while Top Stories are the ones most relevant to you since the last time you checked Facebook. Many speculate whether this new format is good or bad for brand and business pages. By the looks of it, it’s just too early to tell whether brands will be deemed “relevant” to certain users. And if they aren’t seen as “relevant” what can brands and businesses do to change that?

If you’re dying to see what a page might look like with the timeline, Mashable has some mock-ups like this one:

Overall, the new changes seem to be positive for Facebook pages. Now all we have to do is wait for them to completely roll out, but in the mean time we’ll just have to wait and see!

Foursquare is not just an app used to pass the time anymore, it’s full-fledged social technology that can help businesses’ loyalty and awareness grow. For those of you that are unfamiliar (and it’s ok if you are!) Foursquare is a location-based check-in app that you can access on your smart phone or computer. I signed up for the app last year and really starting using it this fall. The biggest misconception (that I found at least) was people worrying about strangers knowing their whereabouts. This is not entirely true. A lot of my friends were skeptical, but they converted and are now foursquare-aholics (as am I). The only people that can see you are your friends that follow you. Other than that, once you’ve checked in to a place, people that are also checked in there can see you too. But of course they can see you physically anyway since you’re at the same place. Still worried? No fear, you have complete control over your Contact and Location information that you can adjust via the Settings.

What Does Foursquare Do?

Once you check-in to a certain location there could be tips, deals, and other information regarding your whereabouts. The tips are great since people that leave tips generally have been to the place multiple times. It’s great to know that when I’m at Gate C8 in the airport there is free coffee from 6AM-10AM. There are also pictures posted from previous check-ins. So you might get to see what the food looks like at the restaurant you’re at or how many people attended a past event at the venue you’re at. For me personally, the best part of a check-in is if a deal comes with it. For instance, ever other time I check-in to YEAH! Burger I get 15% off my entire check. Not too shabby for a measly tap of a button. Another fun feature is if you check in to certain places sometimes you earn a badge, and if you check-in somewhere the most you could become the mayor. Right now my favorite badge I’ve earned is the “Fresh Brew” badge that I won after several check-ins at coffee houses. As for my mayorships? Not terribly impressive, but I am mayor of Everspark! Check out some screenshots of Foursquare in action:

Pretty nifty right?

It’s even better when you think about it from a business perspective. Here’s a few examples of what businesses have done with Foursquare and how you can use it to leverage your own business’ marketing.

The City Badge

Right now, Foursquare is in the process of creating badges for cities in the US and abroad. Users can send in lists of places they believe are go-to destinations in their respective cities. This was a by-product of the White House’s initiative to boost US cities’ tourism. If your business made it onto one of these lists it may be considered one of THE places to go in your city. Atlanta’s badge was launched on December 22 along with Singapore’s. To earn the peach badge just check-in to 5 of the 75 locations on Foursqares Atlanta List. (I even submitted a list for my hometown!

These are the recently released city badges for Atlanta and Singapore.

Mayors have klout!

If you have a business that people come to a lot, be sure to pay attention to who the mayor is. They’re the customer that frequents your establishment the most. Chances are they bring you a good amount of business personally and with referrals to friends. The Boston Phoenix even does articles on the mayors of different businesses around Boston. One quirky perk is a special parking spot for the mayor of the Marketfair Mall in Princeton, NJ:

This is by far the coolest perk of using Foursquare that I’ve come across so far!

Foursquare Explore

A new feature on Foursquare is the explore option. All consumers have to do is type in what they’re looking for or choose from the Foursquare categories (Specials, Food, Coffee, Nightlife…etc.). This is a great tool because if your business is in the vicinity of someone it will show up in their search (based on relevance, of course). The search results can depend on where a person’s been before, where they haven’t been before, and where their friends have been. For restaurants in particular they’ve added full menus to the Foursquare website (coming soon to the app). Looks like I’m going to the Cheesecake factory for dinner tonight…

Foursquare explore is like it’s own local search engine.

Foursquare for Business

The most important feature for businesses on foursquare though is the Business or Brand Page that you can create. Here you can gain total control of your location (with manager approval). With this control come options to link your Twitter page and create deals for your customers. Think of this page as a supplement to your website, Facebook page, and Twitter. It’s a quadruple threat with Foursquare monitoring customers that come and go in real time. A case study (via Foursquare) showed that a steak house in Manhattan differentiated itself by offering a free dessert with every check in. The steak house saw 400 people check-in to redeem the deal and had an estimated $18,000 ROI.

Skeptical? Don’t Be

Skeptical about Foursquare’s reach and its effectiveness? In 2010 alone the mobile check-in app grew 3400% (that like a 5ft person growing 1700ft taller in one year!). Today they have over 15 million users in the US and abroad and have reached the 1.5 billion check-in threshold. Their business pages exceed 600,000. According to Foursquare, Radioshack launched a business page to spur business and provide deals to their most loyal customers. Radioshack noticed that fans of the page spent 350% more than the average Radioshack customer. Creating a business page allows a company to interact with their most loyal customers.

Want the full digital marketing experience for your business? I know that if I love a company I follow them every chance I get. The more they interact with me the more I love and support them. Jump on the Foursquare bandwagon and build your business and brand loyalty!

It’s only the second day of February and we’re ready to get a running start on the month with tons of interactive marketing news. Yesterday, as Google + reportedly hit 100 million users, Facebook filed for its $5 billion IPO. $5 billion is less than originally predicted, but still manages to make Facebook’s filing – if Mark Zuckerberg and is team raises the money – one of the biggest tech IPOs ever.

Facebook and Google +… The Future of the Online World?

While many people – like users on our Facebook page – view this as the next web bubble, sure to pop soon (we all saw how LinkedIn did after filing – as in, not too well in the months following its IPO), others view this as the beginning of the trend toward social as the future of an open, collaborative and connected internet. And Google + obviously hopes to be a large part of this future as well, as, according to Paul Allen on Wednesday, Google +’s numbers are growing, and growing quickly: “Google+ membership has grown more than 10% since Jan. 19th when Larry Page announced 90 million users. I have them at 100.8 million users by the end of the day.” The same old question persists: is this reflective of how many people are using Google + actively? And a new question arises: is this simply because, as of recently, anyone who signs up for a Google service has to create a Google + profile? It’s hard to believe that’s not the case.

Zuckerberg’s Vision

Regardless, social is clearly a large part of all of our lives. Zuckerberg’s vision is one of continued innovation and openness, as he states in his open letter to possible shareholders upon filing. He writes:

“Today, our society has reached another tipping point. We live at a moment when the majority of people in the world have access to the internet or mobile phones — the raw tools necessary to start sharing what they’re thinking, feeling and doing with whomever they want. Facebook aspires to build the services that give people the power to share and help them once again transform many of our core institutions and industries. There is a huge need and a huge opportunity to get everyone in the world connected, to give everyone a voice and to help transform society for the future…. By helping people form these connections, we hope to rewire the way people spread and consume information. We think the world’s information infrastructure should resemble the social graph — a network built from the bottom up or peer-to-peer, rather than the monolithic, top-down structure that has existed to date. We also believe that giving people control over what they share is a fundamental principle of this rewiring.”

There’s already not much in the way of Facebook getting exactly what Zuckerberg wants, with a majority of people actively using the social platform to connect with others and build and maintain relationships. With a $5 billion IPO, there’s even less standing in the way of Facebook creating a very social future.

Speaking of Spending…

What does this mean for search marketing? Is social the only way of the future? No way. In fact, at the end of January, an eMarketer report revealed that projections have search ad spending trending upwards in the coming years. Specifically, the report says, “search spending will rise 27% to $19.51 billion. By 2016, search ad spending will approach $30 billion, following slower but consistent growth between now and then.”

This graph, courtesy of eMarketer, reflects a projected rise in search spending through 2016.

The report also predicts that Google will see the most revenue growth this year, but that Google’s growth rates will likely be surpassed by Microsoft in 2013 and 2014 (bold statement!). However, the report ads, “Still, by that point Google will have nearly 10 times Microsoft’s search ad revenue—$20.28 billion vs. just $2.21 billion” (and you thought Facebook’s $5 billion was a lot. Chump change!).

eMarketer adds that Google will not lose its first place position as the number one ad market dominator, as the search engine will see 77.9% of all US search ad revenues in 2012. eMarketer adds that, 2 years from now, that percentage will grow to nearly 80. The report also places Google, Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL at the top of the search ad marketing pile, noting that, “By 2014, search revenues at Google, Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL will account for 92.1% of all US search ad revenues and 44.3% of all US online ad revenues, up from just under 90% of all search ad revenues and 43% of all US online ad revenues in 2011.”

Social AND Search (Especially Paid) Here To Stay

As you can tell, paid search isn’t going anywhere.

On March 1, 2012, a new privacy policy goes into effect that affects all Google, Gmail, Google Apps, and all other properties’ users. Considering how ubiquitous Google is in many peoples’ lives, both personal and professional, the policy change was bound to cause a stir. That’s why Google got out in front of the mess: I think we can all agree that Google has been more than straightforward about its revised privacy policy, from the numerous emails Gmail users received, to notices on the Google search page, to blog posts, to smoke signals – every possible way Google could get its word out there, it did. So, I know we’re all well aware that there has been a change to the policies espoused by the search engine – but how many of us actually read about it? Probably not many. Let’s graze the surface then, shall we?

What’s All the Fuss About, Anyways?

So, what’s the fuss? If Facebook’s issues have taught us anything, it’s that you cannot change your privacy settings without backlash. But, specifically, what’s the big deal about Google’s new policy? It has many people concerned about the privacy of their information – almost giving them the feeling that big brother is watching, which I think Google actually understands. However, the search giant brings it all back to “user experience,” as in, we’re only watching your every move while you’re signed in to better your experience as a user. In the FAQ about the policy, Google notes, “Second, the new policy reflects our efforts to create one beautifully simple, intuitive user experience across Google. It makes clear that, if you have a Google Account and are signed in, we may combine information you’ve provided from one service with information from other services. In short, we can treat you as a single user across all our products.”

The Policy

The policy itself evolved out of Google’s 60 + policies governing its different services. Now, everything has one policy, so it’s easier to understand and keep track of what you’re agreeing to as a user. Where people get worried is, as Google says in its email to users: “Our new policy covers multiple products and features, reflecting our desire to create one beautifully simple and intuitive experience across Google.” So, every Google product you use will be tracking what you do. Though the search engine turned social media giant has said that you can 1. Sign out and not be tracked or 2. Turn off tracking (here’s exactly how Google says to do it, also in the FAQ: “You still have choice and control. You don’t need to sign in to use many of our services, including Search, Maps and YouTube. If you’re signed in, you can still edit or turn off your Search history, switch Gmail chat to “off the record,” control the way Google tailors ads to your interests, use Incognito mode on Chrome,”), the idea there is still a little frightening. Plus (no pun intended there), with Social Search just having been introduced (which left many a person in the tech world flummoxed), this privacy policy change comes at a difficult time for Google. Not only that, but multiple anti-trust allegations aren’t going away anytime soon, and to be truthful, Google seems to only be adding fuel to the fire.

The slightly voyeuristic new policy covers all Google properties allows Google to streamline your experience across all properties. As the email users received states, the search engine wants an email you received about something to impact your use of Youtube, Gmail, etc. Also, Google will remember the contact information of the people with whom you interact, and will remember this across all properties.

To sum up – the privacy change essentially indicates that Google will start tracking users’ behavior on all of its different platforms, not just during searches. This has made many people uncomfortable, since the search engine will essentially be obtaining a bird’s eye view of everything you as a user do on the web (through Google, at least – which is probably most things, if you’re like me).

Google Business Photos, if you don’t know, are indoor shots of your company that you can have on your Google Places listing if you so choose (it’s a pilot program, and is nowhere near widespread). But these aren’t just your average photos – they’re images that can be turned 360 degrees so that a potential customer can really get a feel for your establishment. Especially if you are a restaurant owner, these photos can have a significant impact on your listing, as many would-be diners like to scout out where they’re going to be eating dinner before it’s even lunch time. Business Photos assure these potential customers that you have a clean, stylish and fun atmosphere where they and their friends can wine and dine and enjoy an evening out. Even if you are not a restaurant owner, though, these photos can go a long way towards proving your trustworthiness both to Google and to your potential customers, since you are being open and are showing off your interior space. It adds another layer of authoritativeness and authenticity to your Places listing.

This is an image of ESI’s own conference room, and the type of image you might see as a “Business Photo” (if it were taken by a “Trusted Photographer” with a real camera and not by me with an iPhone, and if it were a panoramic, 360 degrees rotatable image, of course!).

What Has Changed with Google Business Photos?

Remember back in May when we first introduced Google Business photos? Back then, if you wanted to incorporate business photos into your Google Places listing, you had to first wait for a Google photographer to come to your business and take the pictures. Though you could upload your own photos in addition to the ones taken by the Googlers, the main images had to be taken by them. As Google put it way back in April, “Place Pages currently feature images from business owners and third-party sources, but we wanted to supplement those with additional photos taken by Google photographers to provide consumers with more ways to get a sense of what awaits them when they step through the door of a business.” Though many a business was scrambling to take part, the program was only available in limited cities (this is still true, as the “Trusted Photographers” program is only available in 14 cities in America, as well as in France, the UK, New Zealand and Australia).

How Does This Work?

Now, Google has a website that acts as a resource for those businesses that wish to partake in the Business Photos program. On this website, you can search for a “Google Trusted Photographer,” who you, as the business owner, can interact with, work out a price with, and pay for a photo shoot of your offices. As Google highlights, not only does this make the process easier and more streamlined for businesses looking to partake in Business Photos, but it also supports local photographers (I wonder how they become Google Trusted Photographers?). The photographer then uploads your photos to Google, and voila! You have panoramic, 360-degree views of your business on your Google Places listing (as well as on Google Maps and Google.com).

As we were before, we’re of the opinion that Google Business photos are important- though they are only available in limited locations now, we wouldn’t be surprised if eventually they were integrated somehow with Google + and the Google Places ranking algorithm.

69% of American smartphone users surf the web daily – and the numbers in the UK, France, Japan and Germany are similarly high. There have been multiple surveys and polls released that indicate that the general public is most certainly trending in a very mobile, local-oriented direction. Around the globe, it is clear that more and more people are adopting the smartphone trend. New research from Google (done in conjunction with Ipsos) confirms this fact, and according to the report, “more consumers in the US, UK, Germany, France and Japan use a mobile phone (feature phone or smartphone) than a computer (desktop or laptop).”

The research was conducted in two phases (first, January – February 2011 and second in September – October 2011) among the populations of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan and Germany. It was intended to make more clear the mobile device usage rate globally – including smartphones and tablets – and how that compares to PC usage.

The Results

Google released the research yesterday. It indicates that smartphone ownership is nearly ubiquitous and is only on the rise. Though the smartphone adoption rate is high in most places, Google found that the UK had the highest increase in number of smartphone users – from 30 to 45% of the entire population. The research also revealed that the over 45 demographic is entering the smartphone market more and more, and that, in all 5 countries studied, the number of female smartphone users increased. Though the data reveals that “more consumers use a mobile phone (feature phone or smartphone) than a computer (desktop or laptop) across all five countries,” (in the US, 76% of people were using smartphones or feature phones, while 68% were using laptops/desktops) those who do use smartphones are also using their computers most of the time. The US sees 38% of people using smartphones, as does France, while the UK sees 45%, Japan sees 17% and Germany sees 23% of citizens using smartphones.

Daily Internet Usage

When it comes to daily usage of the internet on smartphones, 69% of American smartphone users, 54% of UK smartphone adopters, 88% of Japanese citizens using smartphones, 49% of German smartphone users and 36% of France’s users are surfing the web everyday while on the go. All of these countries experienced increases from Phase 1 of the research to Phase 2 except for Japan and France. Though users are using their smartphones for search, they are still using their PCs as well (remember, the following data reveals how many SMARTPHONE SEARCHERS are also using their PCs). In the US, 80% of smartphone users also use their desktops to surf the web. The numbers are similar (none dip below 73%) across the other four countries. So, it’s safe to say that both mobile and desktop search engine optimization will continue to be necessary through 2012 and beyond.

PS: Speaking of Google, there has been confirmation of another iteration of Panda (3.2 according to Search Engine Land) having been run within the last 2 weeks.

As you all likely know by now, regardless of disputed active user rates, comparisons to Facebook, and other controversies surrounding Google’s social network, it’s not going anywhere. It’s staying put and it’s going to affect our lives as internet marketers, no matter what we do or say. Google has decided that this is the way search will be in the future – more socially oriented – and we all need to adapt to that to remain relevant in this industry. With that being said, let’s talk some more about Google +.

Google +: Ever-Changing, Ever-Evolving

Since the advent of Google +, many changes have occurred in the space. First, author pages and the rel=author tag came about, allowing you to prove your authority and your authorship for your blog posts (and possibly show up in the search results as such). Then, Google + for brand pages came out, and there was a frenzy as businesses recognized the need to get on the new social network, and get there fast. That frenzy is justified, as Google recently announced a whole new social search, using Google + information.

In light of this newfound importance, we have to remember the basics. Remember when Google + Brand Pages first came out, and there was talk of “Direct Connect”? Here’s a little reminder, in case you don’t: Direct Connect is useful for brands because users can simply type in [+brand name], and the Google + page will come up. Users can Circle brands right away via Direct Connect and connect with them immediately.

Google + Badge: Rel=Publisher

Way back then, the Google + badge was available for those sites that wanted to be candidates for Direct Connect (it was a limited roll out). Many companies, however (especially smaller ones), opted not to use these badges for whatever reason. Maybe it was because it was too new, or because they felt they had no chance at getting the Direct Connect activated. Well, whatever the reason, those who do not have this badge would be wise to implement it now, as it utilizes a rel=publisher tag that connects your website and content to your Google + Brand page. It’s another method of establishing authority, like the rel=author and rel=me tags are for Google + personal pages.

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2767" title="Google-+-Rel=Publisher" src="http://www.eversparkinteractive.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Google-+-RelPublisher.jpg" alt="Google + RelPublisher Rel=Publisher Tag Allows for Greater Google Plus Brand Page Sharing" Rel=Publisher" width="660" height="308" />

As you can see, getting the code for the badge is easy, and you can customize the look of it.

More in Google +: Ask Your Network, Use Your Nickname

Ask Your Network

Search Engine Land’s Danny Sullivan reported on something Google seems to be either testing or slowly rolling out within personal results: the prompt to ask your Google + network about the query for which you are searching. I’m not seeing this on my search results, which is what leads me to believe that Google is simply testing out this feature or taking its sweet time to roll it out to everyone. If you click on the option to ask your friends on Google + a question, a box pops up that has a pre-written message starting with “Hi there! I have a question about….”

This is an interesting addition to a very fresh phenomenon of Google + seeping into the search results pages with personal search, or “Search Plus Your World.” I’ll be interested to see how people respond to this, and how Twitter and Facebook react to the news that even more exclusivity is being granted to Google’s social network.

Use Your Nickname with Google’s Blessing

You can now use your nickname or pseudonym when signing up for Google + (which you have no choice but to do when signing up for any Google service), a long-time coming resolution to an oft-complained about issue. Many bloggers and personalities who worked under pseudonyms were having trouble connecting with and engaging followers and fans.

So, now on Google + you can add a nickname next to your actual name or you can change your actual identifier to your nickname; if your name is flagged as inappropriate, there is also now an appeals process (which requires documentation or other types of proof that you are who you say you are and that you actually go by this name). The downside? Apparently, your nickname may carry over to your use of other Google services, like Gmail.
